[comp.music] MIDI book for Mac

sseidman@polyslo.CalPoly.EDU (The MIDIman) (08/18/89)

In the August issue of EM they had the latest MIX Bookshelf Catalog.
In it is a book about MIDI programming for the Macintosh. I was just
wondering if anyone knows how this book rates. It is by De Furia &
Scacciaferro, and all of their books have been extremely helpful.
I have a Turbo Pascal compiler. Also, does anyone know how useful
this book will be now that the MIDI Manager from Apple has been
released? Since I would like to use the MIDI Manager, I would hate
to buy the book, only to find out that I won't use it. Thanks for
any information.

The De Furia & Scacciaferro book mostly concerns itself with MIDI
Pascal & MIDI Basic. I've never thought that the De Furia column in
Keyboard was all that good. Crummy programming style. If you already
know how to program the Mac the MIDI Manager info is all you'll need.
I've converted one program I wrote that used the MacTutor (Kirk
Austin) drivers to the MIDI Manager. It took about a day. I then wrote
a couple of little data filters. Took about half a day each. MIDI
Manager is pretty cool.
