This fall I thought I'd dabble with some homemade music-making schemes, and one idea I got was using an old 8-bit machine to synthesize speech. What I'd like to do get a MIDI interface for the machine and program the machine to respond as a MIDI instrument, producing speech as the output. I am looking for speech synthesis software or hardware for either the Atari 8-bit machines (I have access to a 1200XL and an 800XL) or the Commodore 64. I am also looking for a MIDI interface (like the Hybrid Arts one for the Atari 8-bitters) for either machine. And I'm still looking for a nice 6502 assembler/editor that will run on Unix (haven't been able to talk to the simtel20.arpa machine). Any help would be appreciated.
