[comp.music] Pro Composer

allyn@blake.acs.washington.edu (Allyn Weaks) (08/28/89)

I bought an elderly version (2.3) of Professional Composer from my brother,
who never liked it enough to actually use it. (He loves Performer, by the
way, in spite of the peculiar interface.) The main problem I have now is
the copy protection - Copy II Mac 7.2 can't make me a valid key disk, even
though the copy list includes Pro. Composer. Even though I only had to pay
a pitance for the program, I begin to think that was too much. I live in a
dusty basement with several very furry creatures, and I have a higher rate
of floppy failure than average. So, is there a way to copy the key
(actually the key is from version 2.2, they sent him one free upgrade to
2.3), or better yet, is there a patch for 2.3? Or is the most recent
version (3.0?) not protected to make it worth my while to upgrade? I
haven't been able to talk to MotU (or the Copy II people) because of the
weekend, and information from you all will doubtless be more useful anyway.
Also, what nifty features would appear if I did upgrade to 3.0? Proper
part extraction (i.e., compressing measures of rests)? Step time data
entry from MIDI? MIDI file input/output?

I'm mostly interested in score printing, anything from recorder duets
through sections of 8 part vocal scores to maybe some full orchestra stuff,
if it's up to it. Seems too slow from what I've seen. Is there anything
else at the high end other than Finale? I've heard rumors of Music
Engraver; anyone know anything about it? (Or am I over my quota of
questions for one posting? :-)
