[comp.music] Printing music from an IBM clone - request for information

hancock@endor.harvard.edu (tom Hancock) (11/15/89)

Hi,

A friend of mine asked me to post her request for software to print and
display music. Her requirements are below, and any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated (please send via e-mail). I apologize if this is
the wrong newsgroup, or if you've done this to death. Thanks,

Tom Hancock

            DAYDREAM MUSIC PRINTING SOFTWARE

My musical needs are very simple, for my interest is in the traditional
tunes of nursery songs, so that I only need the melody line, usually
with the words fitted to the notes. I sometimes want to compare different
versions of the same tune, setting them all in the same key and displaying
them in parallel.

For printing, I need the same thing preferably insertable as an illustrative
example in text produced by a word processor? My word processor, PC-write, is
supposed to be able to insert files made by a graphics program.

My equipment is an IBM clone (Televideo) with 256K of memory and a color
graphics display card and two disk drives with a printer (Citizen 120D) which
can react as an Epson dot-matrix printer.

Questions I ask when inquiring about music printing programs include

Is it IBM compatible without the special Music Feature? With the Music
      Feature?

      How much does it cost?

How much memory does it require?

Does it provide for inserting the words into a song?

Does it put out its graphics in a format that can be copied directly
to the printer? I should like to be able to insert musical examples
and illustrations in a longer text.

I may say that I have also some daydream needs for tune filling and
comparison. If I were having software written expressly for my use, it would
be possible to transpose into scale position numbers (1 to 7, superscript
for the octave above, subscript for the one below, preceding plus or minus
sign for sharps or flats, with bar lines indicated by slashes or vertical
bars). It would be nice to have a program that would also summarize by
eliminating all but the notes after bar lines.
