[comp.music] Need help with MIDI

hartanto@m.cs.uiuc.edu (11/29/89)

I just bought a Yamaha PSR-36 portable keyboard, and intend to connect
it to my IBM-PC compatible with Midi interface.
The keyboard it self has a MIDI IN and MIDI OUT port.
Since I'm new in this business I need some recommendation of
which Midi interface and software to buy.
I prefer a dumb Midi interface that connects to the
serial port of my PC. As for the software I have
no idea of what to buy, but since I'll be using it only
for fun, I won't spend more than US$200 for that. It would
be even better if it is a public domain software.

Any kind of help will be appreciated.

I've never heard of a MIDI interface that connects to a PC serial port.
There are reasonably priced MIDI cards out there, though. I believe
Music Quest in Plano, TX makes an entry-level one which is around
$125-$150 or so?

I've never seen any PD sequencing software for the PC that was anything
more than marginally usable. Cakewalk used to be bundled with one of
Music Quest's MIDI cards for a pretty reasonable price, but I don't know
if that deal still stands.
