Allan R. Kmetz of Murray Hill Bell Labs gave a talk today about
current and future LCD technology. Of interest to net.micro readers is that
evaluation units for 25x80 displays are being provided by several
manufacturers. This means that in 2 to 3 years you will be able to purchase
products such as terminals and portable micros with standard sized displays.
The cost of these displays is only slightly higher than CRTs.
Dr. Kmetz showed a slide of cost vs display-density for CRTs (color
and B/W), plasma panals, LCDs, and a few other technologies. The interesting
thing is that the curve for CRTs is linear, while for plasma panels it rises
steeply and then levels out well above B/W CRTs and even above color CRTs.
But for LCDs the curve approximates the B/W CRT curve, although the max
density is much less. Dr. Kmetz indicated that LCD display density will
continue to increase.
Also of interest is the progress being made in gray scale and color
displays. Apparently a low resolution and very small color TV is in the
works and may become availabe within the next 5 years.
