 Dear Friends,

the present newsletter consists mainly of new books, articles and
software all concerning the Essen institution (which definately
will be closed in 1993). Then you will find some additional in-
formation on the marseille conference(s). The most important in-
formation, however, arrives from Bernard Bel and will be placed
 here:

A number of participants (mainly non-ICTM members) have already
registered their participation in the STG meeting in Marseille.
We request you to send the form to Bernard Bel very soon so that
a planning of communications may be organised. It is likely that
we will extend the meeting on October 1, but we need to inform
the Youth Hostel a long time in advance. If you do not wish to
stay at the Youth Hostel, you may fill in the form for hotel re-
gistration in the MAI 90 Conference (3-6 October): accomodation
can be arranged through the same channel.

We expect many more participants, including local teams who are
working on music representation (wavelets, etc.); the information
will be included in the folder announcing the MAI 90 Conference.
We therefore hope there will be enough space left for ICTM mem-
 bers!

 PLEASE REGISTER !!!!!!!!!!

 Best wishes from

 Helmut Schaffrath

DISSERTATION ON COMPUTER-ANALYSIS

Since Barbara Jesser has now (after her Ph.D. finals) finally
decided to have her dissertation printed, it cannot appear (at P.
Lang, Bern) before 1991. Owners of MAPPET will find many necessa-
ry details in this book which will appear in German. Chapter 6,
however, is being translated into Chinese. Apart from this chap-
ter we copy only the main titles to demonstrate the range of im-
portant discussions in the field of computer and analysis.
Those who just want to have a more detailed impression can ask
for a discette containing ASCII texts. E-mail readers would pro-
bably have some difficulties with German Umlaute, but the files
can also be transfered. Since the book contains many graphics,
however, it might be necessary to ask for a paper copy (this only
in urgent situations).

Barbara will no longer be met at this University, but does her
second teacher's training at a Bochum secondary school now.

EDITION OF 100 SELECTED CHINESE SONGS

As one of the outcomes of the Essen-Chinese project we are prepa-
ring an "Anthology" of 100 selected Chinese folksongs. The editi-
on will consist at least of staff notations, pinyin-translitera-
tions, a German (more or less) literal translation, comments and
the Chinese characters. This means that it will contain many gra-
phics. - We are also preparing a cassette containing as many of
the songs as possible. - It is not established yet if we'll find
a publisher for it.

English MAPPET-Manual

With Randy Tollefsen's help (Univ. of Utrecht) for the software-
translation and Peter Cooke's help for the manual the English
version of MAPPET is now complete. E-mail readers who cannot re-
ceive three (minor) graphics can ask for copies via the network.
Others should write to us for printouts. The English version now
is more recent than the German equivalent. A new German edition
will follow soon.

New supporting programs for MAPPET

There are some versions of "STRIP" now in the German edition,
which - to say it ironically - reduce much of the work one has
done with the melody files before:

1. (old) reduces the completely analyzed *.SAM files into the
original *.SM (just containing your unanalyzed data).

2. reduces *.SM files to the key- and melody lines only into a
  *.SN file.

3. Changes every pitch into time values from *.SN files and wri-
tes an *.SR file containing only the key- and the melody li-
  nes.

4. Reduces any *.SN file to pitch-symbols (i.e. without time va-
  lues) into *.ST files.

5. same as above but reduces also any repeated note.

We hope to combine these routines into a single routine some day
and then offer it "under the roof" of the MAPPET main panel. For
smaller amounts of data the STRIP programs themselves can help
one find variants without the large analytical programs written
for MAPPET.

Conversion MIDI<-> ESAC finished

has written a program in Omikron-BASIC and Easy_Gem under TOS for
Atari computers which converts either ESAC code into MIDI- Stan-
dard files or vice verse. People who are interested can also ask
for an English version. Both ESAC- and MIDI files use MAPPET-con-
ventions and formats. For more explanations please write to Peer.
We will try to give a demonstration during the Marseille STG-mee-
ting.

Also Frans Wiering's program which converts ESAC <-> DARMS will
be demonstrated in Marseille.

MARSEILLE ...
the capital of the Provence, with its 2600 year old history dating back to the
Greeks, displays unrivalled wealth. The heart of the City is the marvellous
Vieux-Port with picturesque old markets. Nearby are the Frioul islands and the
Island of If with its legendary castle that owes its fame to Alexandre Dumas's
Count of Monte Cristo. From the University Campus, a short walk will take you
down to the famous Calanques, an ideal (pollution free) place for bathing in
October. During the Conference a sight-seeing tour of the City will be offered
to participants.
