[comp.music] Mac sounds on a PC!

ctdonath@rodan.acs.syr.edu (Carl T. Donath) (07/13/90)

It is possible to play rather high-quality sounds thru the IBM PC's
speaker! Some people have written software that uses the PC's speaker
as a 1-bit D/A converter doing delta modulation (i.e. it sounds real
good). Do an anonymous FTP from ccb.ucsf.edu to get the REMAC.EXE program
from the Pub/Sound_list directory. Get some of the .SND files while
yer at it (Mac-sampled sounds clipped from The Simpsons, Star Wars,
Star Trek, and others).

This REMAC program is great for experimenting with algorithmic sounds -
write a program to generate a sound file (say, the output of the bifurication
algorithm) and, once the file is completed, it can be played back
immediately. No downloading to a sampler, no programming a synth, just
use the PC's speaker.
