[comp.music] contamination of comp.music

I agree completely. Another complaint of mine is that there seems to be a lot
of cross-posting between this group and r.m.s. I read both groups, and
unfortunately my news software doesn't have any way to filter out the
duplicates. (And no, I can't switch to rn or whatever is the current rave
software.) C'mon folks. Let's try and stop the cross-posting and get stuff in
the correct place. Thanks.

I'm not a habitual complainer, but I'm sorry to see NEWSGROUP being
increasingly swamped with articles about BADINFO;
shouldn't we restrict these to OTHRGROUP? When I originally
started reading this newsgroup, articles were generally confined to
INTEREST which I believe was the original intent of the group's founder.
Of course, part of the blame rest with the namer of the newsgroup.
Perhaps a new group with a more precise name would keep the others away?

This man's right. Please take all this crap to rec.music.synth.
Here's a quick guide to straighten out where to post.

IF YOU WANT TO THEN TAKE IT TO
sell your korg rec.music.synth
get patches for your DX7 rec.music.synth
sell your DX7 rec.music.synth
find out which drum machine to buy rec.music.syth
bash Otto Laske comp.music
bash ICMC comp.music
find out where to ftp csound comp.music

Sorry if rec.synth stuff appears in this newsgroup. But this is the
only music newsgroup they'll let us have. I have found the
"contaminated" articles rather helpful. I, for one, intend to keep
]reading and posting them here, unless they let us have other
newsgroups.

Perhaps a brief, regular (monthly?) reminder of the group's
purpose would be helpful, both to those who prefer that the
contents match the intent of 'comp.music' and those who would gain
greater benfit from posting their synth-equipment info/questions
to 'rec.music.synth' instead.
One small bug: systems that carry the 'comp' heiarchy but not
the 'rec' heiarchy. But there are ways...

Point of information: How many 'comp.music' readers have to use
this newsgroup as a 'catch-all' music group because you cannot read
groups in the 'rec' heiarchy?

The name comp.music seems clear to those with a background in academic
computer music, but to those first encountering the group, the name is more
ambiguous, seeming to include anything relating to computers and music, or
music by computer people. Perhaps it would be helpful to not bash those
without access to rec.music.synth, or who don't know about software
synthesis, but come up with a more precise newsgroup name.

I wish this expression "academic computer music" would go away. Let's just
say, computers and music, any aspect, theoretical or practical;
this is also the unofficial forum for things pertaining to AI and music,
or cognition and music, or perceptual psychology and music, or mathematics
and music, etc.

The only thing that really doesn't belong here are questions about
buying and selling synthesizers.

That, at any rate, is how I feel about it.

I feel that synthesizer questions DISCOURAGE those interested in the
matters above from posting (here or anywhere else).
