I'm planning to sell my Compaq Portable 386 and buy another computer. One of the reasons I want to upgrade is because I need more slots and other expansion capabilities (e.g., a much larger disk) in order to use the machine as part of a studio. I don't currently use the computer at all for studio related work by I plan to slowly get into this in the future. Specifically I'm interested in MIDI sequencing, MIDI control, and eventually in digital recording and sampling. My question is this, will a 25 MHz 80386 based machine provide me with sufficient computing power to do these things? Can such a processor keep up with the real-time demands of these tasks? A related question, will the standard ISA bus supply sufficient I/O bandwidth to handle the data movement? Do I need an EISA based machine? I don't imagine that MIDI data movement will be much of a problem but I'm totally in the dark about the demands of digital recording, routing, and/or processing. Comments, suggestions, and experiences would be greatly appreciated. I'm extremely knowledgable about computer hardware related issues, I'm simply lacking in this type of knowledge as regards MIDI and digital sound interfaces. Please respond by email. I will summarize to the net if responses and interest warrant. Thanks in advance! -- FROM: Stephen D.
