The 1990 issue of Computing in Musicology, a digest of current
research covering activities in music history, theory, composition, analysis,
performance, ethnomusicology, bibliography, and acoustics, is now available
from the Center for Computer Assisted Research in the Humanities, 525
Middlefield Road, Ste. 120, Menlo Park, CA 94025. CM is edited by Walter B.
Hewlett and Eleanor Selfridge-Field from reports provided directly by
active researchers and software developers. This issue contains 170 pages
and provides approximately 50 pages of illustrations. It includes articles
on encoding neumes and mensural notation, optical recognition of musical
data, technical standards for music documents, software for dance notation,
software for analysis, teaching, and composition, issues of organization and
access in data base development, and workstations and hyperware.
CM provides the only systematic and comprehensive annual survey of
software for music printing. More than 50 programs, suited to
approximately a dozen different hardware environments, are listed in the
current issue. Every issue includes addresses for all the research
projects and programs cited, lists of theses-in-progress, conference
notices, and miscellaneous news. A five-year comprehensive index appeared
in 1989. CM has been praised for its leading role in providing a forum that
is both interdisciplinary and international, in making technical information
available in ways that are easily comprehensible to humanities scholars, and
in suggesting new methods of and directions for future research.
To order CM, please send your name, address, and payment of $15 per
copy plus postage and handling [US, Canada~$2.00 per order up to three
copies, all other addresses by surface mail~$3.00 per order up to three
copies; Europe by air~$8.00 per item; all other points by air~$10.00 per
item]. All payments must be in $US paid by check through an American bank
or by postal money order. All checks should be made out to CCARH and sent
to the Center for Computer Assisted Research in the Humanities, 525

[ I regularly comment here on the value of this remarkable publication,
and the 1990 edition is no exception. The contribution to the field
made by the Center in Menlo Park is outstanding, and I do urge all
readers to get in touch with them to order a copy of the Directory
or to let them know about recent developments in the field. - S ]

The 1989 Computing in Musicology directory asserts that Erato
Software Corp. of Salt Lake City, U.S.A., has available a Breitkopf
und Haertel music font suitable for Canon laser beam printers.
However, mail to that company is returned by the Salt Lake City
postmaster with advice that the company's mail redirection order has
expired.
Can anyone supply a correct e-mail or fax or postal address for
the Erato firm or advise whether this font/fount is still available,
perhaps from some other source?
A reply to michael@extro.ucc.su.OZ.AU will be welcome.
