I just received the latest catalog from DAK Industries (8200 Remmet Ave., Canoga Park, CA 91304, toll free 1-800-888-7808. No, this isn't an ad, but if I don't put the address here, somebody will ask me to follow up with it.) For $299, they're offering a package consisting of: . a 49-key pressure-sensitive, 16-note polyphonic, 128-voice MIDI keyboard (no brand quoted) . an interface to a Nintendo (game system), and . a Nintendo cartridge that implements a music-teaching system. Says the ad, the system, engineered by Software Toolworks and "a concert pianist from the Juilliard School of Music", not only presents exercises, but also monitors the keyboard and diagnoses your errors. Sounds pretty wild, but not completely unbelievable. Does anybody have experience with this thing? How is the sound and keyboard feel? Do they have anything like a sustain pedal? Is the software suitable for a kid to learn with? Are there competing products? Any info appreciated -- reply by email to rik@cs.washington.edu . Thanks, --Rik
