[comp.music] Cassette Tapes for Four-Tracks

I've got a TASCAM Porta5 4-track.

I'm looking for three things.

1) Advice on how to use it to my best advantage -- that is, tricks from anyone
who is familiar with the device.

2) Advice on whether I should trade it in and buy a different unit which is
   much better.

but MOST IMPORTANTLY:

3) What cassette tape is the *best* for least dropouts and least problems
with this unit? It employs DBX and it runs at variable tape-normal speed.

Find out what tape brand and type was used to calibrate the electronics.
They sometimes mention it in the specs. If you use the same tape as the
calibration tape then you'll get performance that best matches the
promised specs on the machine. Of course you might want to try other
tape formulations if you want to improve some particular aspect of the
reproduction (such as output level or brightness.) Probably the best
way to go is to find a tape that meets your requirements and have the
recorder recalibrated to it.
