[comp.music] Fractal Music References Sought

alves@calvin.usc.edu (William Alves) (02/19/91)

I know this subject has come up before, but now a friend has asked for this
information. Please email or post any references or other information you
have on the applications of fractals to music. My friend is especially in-
terested in fractal generation of wavetables, if this has ever been down.

Thanks!

Your friend may be interested in an article entitled "Fractal
Geometry of Music (physics of melody)", by Kenneth J. Hsu and Andreas
J. Hsu, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, Vol. 87, pp. 938-941, February 1990.
It purports to show that the frequency spectrum of melodic intervals
(at least in some Bach works) obeys a fractal distribution law.

I found the article to be of questionable value, but it may
provide a point of departure for future work, and your friend may
simply want to know what other people are doing.

The July 1986 edition of BYTE had a large section dedicated to fractal music

Check the back issues of Computer Music Journal. There are several articles
available within the last 2-3 years. In addition I remember a couple of papers
presented at AES in LA in September 1987 that dealt with that topic.
