[comp.music] MIDI and UNIX

crum@alicudi.usc.edu (Gary L. Crum) (04/03/91)

What work with MIDI has been done on computers running the UNIX operating
system? Like, for example, does any software exist that will use "ordinary"
serial ports as MIDI ports with small converter hardware as is used with
Macintosh computers?

The only MIDI driver and programming interface on a UNIX system that I
know of is that which is included with NeXT system software. Has this
work been done on any other UNIX systems, by the manufacturer or 3rd parties?
How about SiliconGraphics and IBM workstations in particular?
Can the Apple Macintosh Midi Manager software be used with A/UX? (2.0?)

If this has been discussed before, excuse me and I'd appreciate a summary
or references to literature. (Is there an archive of comp.music postings?)

Thanks a bunch,
Gary
