One of the great things about the net is that its rarely necessary to commit an opinion oneself: there is nearly always someone else out there who will say the same thing (usually better than I could have :-). However in the end I waded through what seemed like 200 or so articles (should take such long holidays!) looking for someone to pass on the theory - I forget whence it comes - that the "Intrada" is so titled because the Mass was intended to be performed OUTSIDE, and that at the end the congregation files back into the church. Seems a little dubious to me, given that juicy organ part; I believe that J. may have made some comment about the "out-of-doors" nature of the piece but maybe he didn't mean that literally? Anyone else have more reliable info? Incidentally, those 200 articles seemed to have been largely sparked off by Todd's seemingly innocuous list of "Greats": a most wonderful argument and a joy to behold. Keep it up folks! Oh, and whilst I'm here, perhaps I can wave the flag for a current favourite of mine: Donatoni. Not perhaps the earlier stuff (of which perhaps the "Etwas Ruhiger Im Ausdruck" is the best known - definitely in the impossibilist tendency, despite the existence of an excellent recording) but rather the music composed in the last 12 or so years. I'd heartily recommend "Tema" and "Refrain". Not sure how to describe this music, except that the composer's sense of fun shines through for me, and my sense of harmony and rhythm is well satisfied. (So much so that I couldn't resist lifting some ideas for a piece of my own). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Andy Spiceley |anyone want to hire a quartet(pno/vl/vc/cl)?
