There have been a number of research projects on north Indian classical music initiated by the International Society for Traditional Arts Research, which was founded in New Delhi in 1982 (with generous help of the Ford Foundation and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Bombay). I was a founder member and the editor of "ISTAR Newsletter" (now out of print) in which a number of early research papers were published. The main two projects (still active) have been melodic transcription/analysis of ragas and the analysis of improvisatory techniques in tabla drumming. I built a real-time accurate melograph for the first project (now obsolete because of new software devices) which is now being continued by Wim van der Meer (ISTAR Nederland / Utrecht University). Wim was a musicologist and a specialist of Indian music. Now he knows more than me about computers... The second project is directed by anthropologist Jim Kippen, a specialist of tabla, currently teaching at the University of Toronto (kippenj at utorepas. bitnet). There have been many publications on this project, e.g. "Computers & Humanities" 23, 3, 1990. Also chapters in two forthcoming books... I saw many programs of this type on MAC (like FINALE CODA) but never on sun. Could you, please, tell me, if such a program exists, and how I could get it (ftp, buying,...) I should like that the printing quality will be high (the best as possible) with all the possible music notations ...
