In reply to Richard Friedman's reply to Andreas Kagedal's query concerning A-R
Editions, Inc.'s music engraving software, A-R Editions has recently (within
the past year or so) released its formerly in-house, Sun/UNIX music engraving
program for general consumption. It is marketed under the brand name "MusE."

The brochure lists the following specifications:

Hardware: Sun Microsystems SPARC and Sun-3 platforms

Operating System: UNIX

Interface: NeWS and Open Windows

Output: PostScript printers and typsetters

Input devices (optional): PC-AT compatibles, networked terminals, and
Macintosh

Cynthia Horton, Vice President of A-R Editions, gave a brief presentation on
the system during a plenary session at the 1991 Music Library Association
Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. As Richard Friedman suggests,
the system is pricey: Ms. Horton explained that A-R has targeted smaller music
publishers as potential customers, rather than the general public (as has, for
example, Coda Music Software). A-R uses Suns and a Macintosh for input.

Hello! I'm looking into possible topics for an honors project in Computer
Science, one of which is MUSIC TRANSCRIPTION. I'd like to write a program
which will run under unix + Xwindows -- one that can take advantage of the
severe number-crunching ability of these machines (rather than a slow, personal
computer). Has any progress been made in this area? Any information that you
can send me will be greatly appreciated. Also, any source code from ANY
transcription program on ANY computer would be VERY USEFUL.

Thanks in advance!

Those of you who are after Mac Notation Software should
check out Music Publisher. This program does most of what you
need for standard typesetting, and in fact 75% of all music
typesetting in Australia is now done with the program. It should
be available from distributors such as Thinkware in California,
and possibly a company called 'Intersoft' in Santa Cruz.

It's pretty cheap, and comes with an additional keyboard that
speeds up notation entry. Has real time input, but it does't import
MidiFiles. Lots of copyists use it, but it's not designed for
non-traditional notation.

I am trying to write software which translates a standard MIDI file
into a MTex file. Is there anybody who has experience on this
subject and is there anybody who is interested in this kind
of software ?
