Hi folks, I am looking for a good sequencing software. I'm also interested in sampling techniques. I've been told of a product called "Studio Vision" by Opcode Systems, which runs on a Macintosh II equiped with an Audiomedia card. "Studio Vision" features integrated MIDI and Digital Audio Recording. Could someone please tell me if it is a good product, or if there exists something even better ? I could also buy a sampler together with a sequencing program like PRO 24 whichs runs on a cheaper Atari. What is the best choice ? More generally, what is the best for comp. music: Mac or Atari ? Thanks in advance for any advices and comments. Hussein Yahia hussein@bora.inria.fr

Hi Hussein: Studio Vision, which I have used in a studio setting and also explored a bit at a hi-tech dealer's, is an exiting but, alas at least here in Canada, a VERY ex~rpensive system. It combines both MIDI plus acoustic soundtracks and BOTH can be edited visually to the minuest detail. I know: I used it on my last album and it was great. BUT g}iot(od as it is, it's not the ultimate answer: some}i peo~rpl}ie feel that this approach is an in{_termediate one and that more flexible cheaper, OUTBOARD systems will be aavailable soon-ish. I would not say that PRO-24 is the ideal software as an alternative: if you want to use an Atari then NOTATOR or CUBASE V2 (my favorite) are much superior, stae of the art in fact. (See Electronic Musician Jan 1991 for a detailed review of both.) As to which is better Mac or Atari, Atari is probably a more stable computer for sequencing, it is MUCH cheaper and its software MIDI-wise is very good. The Mac is more expensive, has probably more and somewhat better software (eg Studio Vision is Mac only) and more people who are pro musicians, especially studio and production people use it. Thet can of course recoup their costs from clients. I produce New Age music which has sold well and I am wondering whether to buy a Mac or Atari. I think it will be an Atari for two reasons: 1) The software I want is tops )2 The price is less than half the Mac's and (3 using versions of Forth one can develop marvellous interactive work in which the computer is an instrumsnt rather than just a sequencer. You can do that wiyth the Mac using Max or HMSL etc but again that is expensive and not all that easy to use at first.. Oh that's 3 reasons! Let me know what you decide: I'll be interested. I'll post a message here on what I do too. And yes, Ihave a sampler Akai S900. I am just learning how to program it; its potential is wonderful. Good luck.
