[comp.music] Need help getting started

liwen@calvin.sbc.com (Andy. Liwen) (06/26/91)

This is YAHDIGS (Yet Another How Do I Get Started) request. I am working for a
research segment of an RBOC trying to figure out multimedia. I have been given
license (that means a budget) to explore MIDI. I am a bit of a musician
(trained voice and play piano [well use to]) so I've got some appreciation for
music but am still lost at sea.

I have options of PC, Mac, or Sun (preferred) for MIDI platform. Eventually
I'll have to move everything (at least music production) to a Sun but for now
the other platforms may be used for composition.

I need help in what background info to read, e.g. mags and/or books, to explain
basic principals. I am reading the news group, but it still too specific and
over my head. BTW, I did attend Usenix and went to the MIDI BOF as well as
other appropriate talks. But now I need practical guidance. Like where does
one go to buy the synths and such issues. Of course some advise on platform to
use and equipment to buy would be welcome.

Could some kind soul(s) please e-mail me some helpful hints. I promise to post
the results of my experiments and research.

Thanks,
//Andy Liwen
