[comp.os.aos] Mail and news software

op@lids.mit.edu (11/20/89)

The sendmail program provided by DG as part of the TCP/IP package is not very
friendly. Before sendmail was available our site had developed a complete mail
system, including the user interface. The mailer interfaces with TCP/IP and
implements the SMTP protocol. It runs on a 20000 (AOS/VS) and is very stable.

Our package also includes a finger server and a printer server. The printer
server listens on TCP port 515 for print requests sent by the Unix lpr
command. It gets a file, filters it as required, and prints it.
Our DG serves as a print server for a number of Sun, Ultrix and Vax/Vms
machines.

We also have programs to finger local or remote hosts, to get news from Unix
usenet servers using TCP/IP, and to post messages such as this one.

We would be happy to freely provide this software to interested parties, by
ftp preferably. For information on how to get it send mail to op@lids.mit.edu.
