[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.domains] DNS RRs and PPP

Ariel@RELAY.PRIME.COM (Robert Ullmann) (08/09/90)

Hi,

[I thought that this was of general interest]

Lance Norskog, thinman@cup.portal.com, asks:

> Ummmm, are you purposefully forgetting phone numbers for PPP links?
> SL/IP is a lost cause for standardising, but PPP should be in there.

Since the ISDN number and the phone number are the same thing, I
should think that the info is already there.

E.165, SRIP: "Present subscribers to the PSTN may become ISDN
subscribers without changing subscriber number." (quoted from
memory)

An ISDN host, recieving an inbound connect with bearer capability
that indicates that it is a gated-modem connect could easily
interpret it as PPP. When making a call, it could react to a
release telling it that the (destination) subscriber is a PSTN
subscriber (thus not reachable with digital bearer capability)
by making a PPP/modem call.

Something else that might be experimented with.
