[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.domains] Subnet considerations

hughes@packrat.ec.usf.EDU (Ken Hughes) (10/30/90)

I'm not sure this is the correct place to post, so if not don't flame me-
just point me elsewhere....

Our department (computer science) has currently about forty machines, all in
one subdomain (131.247.1). There are some people in the department who have
proposed subnetting to cut down on their net traffic and wish to subnet with
anywhere from five to fifteen machines on each subnet. Their motivation (and
I'm not judging whether its right or wrong) is since we ARE computer science,
we should have as many as 16 to 64 subnets.

These machines are mainly Sun systems, diskless clients, so there is a
considerable amount of NFS net traffic. We're also (trying to) convert users
to X11 and there is a feeling that "all those X windows will be throwing
bitmaps all across the ethernet" (that's a paraphrase; I'm not buying the
argument right now).

My question; what are other universities doing to decide how much to subnet?
Is is driven by net traffic, number of machines, department size, or political
considerations? Any suggestions?
