[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.domains] Ping a host in Africa?

dwells@fits.cx.nrao.edu (Don Wells) (11/23/90)

For several years I have been watching more and more countries connect
to the Internet. I have enjoyed pinging a host in each one as soon as
it became possible. The sensation is like a stamp collector receiving
an example of an elegant stamp from some distant exotic place not
previously represented in his collection. Tonight I was reviewing the
list of countries I have pinged [1], and realized that I have "worked"
all continents except Africa and Antarctica. I presume that eventually
the US NSF's South Pole research station will get an IP link, but I
won't hold my breath while waiting. Africa is a more likely case,
which leads to my question:

Is there a host on the continent of Africa that can be pinged? [2]

				=-=-=

[1] 22 countries: AT AU CA CH CL[3] DE DK FI FR GR IL IS IT JP KR MX
NL NO NZ SE UK US(of course); 5 continents: Asia, Australia, Europe,
North_America, South_America, plus some islands in the Atlantic,
Caribbean and Pacific. IL, GR and AT were the most recent additions to
the list of countries. I know of the existence of IP links to BE and
Argentina but don't yet know any IP numbers in those countries.

[2] NOTE: Israel is in Asia, not Africa.

[3] The Chilean host is at a US astronomical observatory in central
Chile; although its name is in the EDU domain, not the CL domain, it
is definitely located in South_America.

There may well be several early next year. Our international link is still
via dialup, but there are a growing number of hosts within South Africa that
are talking TCP/IP to each other.

The intention is to get a dedicated line to give us true internet
connectivity. Until then, you will have to make do with this :-)
