[comp.protocols.tcp-ip.domains] nameserver lookup programs

jrosen@vms.macc.wisc.edu (Jay Rosenbloom) (04/08/91)

Hello,

I'm looking for information on domain name server query programs like nslookup
and DiG. I'd be grateful if someone could give me some pointers to programs
for the PC that support lookups for all RR types (public domain/shareware
preferred). I'm aware of "netname" in the PCIP package which does only A
record lookups and the same utility in the MD-DOS/IP package (WiscWare) which
can lookup up other types. Any others? Any for VMS VAXes running CMU-TEK?

Thanks!
-Jay

I have a program for the VAX using CMU-TEK's TCP/IP. I am willing to email it
to anyone who wants it. You can ask any query, its input is symbolic, and it
gives a full report of the answers received. It does, however, have three
problems:

	1. It only makes TCP connections to name servers.
	2. It often screws up when receiving long zone transfers.
	3. It is written in (cringe) Fortran.

The first two problems could probably be fixed by someone who either knows
Bliss-32 and/or understands CMU-Tek's implementation at a higher level than
can be gleaned from the documentation. The third problem would probably
require a rewrite to solve.
