Are any Zenith tech reps or Zenith-savvy folks listening? Replace HD in Zenith Z248 (AT clone) with Seagate ST 4096. Format and partition 33M (C:) and 47M (D:) with Disk Manager and Zenith MS DOS 3.3 Plus. Restore files with Fastback Plus. Everything seems O.K. Then notice copies from any source to D: partition gives bunches of 16 0-length files with current creation date, plus some normally copied files. CHKDSK shows lost clusters. Very repeatable. C: partition O.K. and program files on D: work. Seems to affect small files more often. Seagate Disk Manager person says that Zenith MS DOS 3.3 plus has FAT structure more similar to Compaq DOS 3.3 and DOS 4, than MS DOS 3.3, because Zenith DOS 3.3 allows big primary partitions. Said I should use Disk Manager with /4 (DOS 4) switch; or I could LLF and partition directly with Zenith's PREP (llf routine) and PART (partition routine). I eventually settle on the Disk Manager solution, and it works -- no more bunches of 0-length files on copies to D: partition. But before I reach this point I waste much time unsuccessfully trying to get Zenith to recognize a D: partition using just the Zenith llf and partitioning routines, in an effort to avoid the DM drivers if possible. I find I can llf with PREP, and with PART can define a formattable and bootable C: partition of either 79 MB or 40MB. But I can't get Zenith to recognize a 39MB D: partition automatically, even though PART tells me I have 40 MB C: and 39 MB D:. Zenith DOS 3.3 says this is now done automatically, without having to use the utility ASGNPART, as was done in Zenith DOS 3.21. Installing new ROMs (version 10) doesnt make any difference. Has anyone else messed with this combination of software and hardware? Thanks in advance. M Volow, VA Medical Center, Durham, NC 27705 mvolo@ecsvax.UUCP 919 286 0411
