[comp.sys.zenith] Upgrading a z-158?

bobmon@iuvax.cs.indiana.edu (RAMontante) (02/22/90)

I'm sitting here wishing, and I thought I'd get some input from people...

I would like to upgrade my old z-158 from its biggest bottlenecks, namely
the 8-bit bus and the V20 (8088) cpu chip. For 1) minimal money, 2) minor
effort. I'd like to reuse the current HD controller (old Adaptec) and EEMS
card if possible, to avoid having to spend more money up front. (I suppose
that it's unreasonable to hope to reuse the 8087...?) (I can upgrade those
parts later, when I can afford to and it's not just wasted effort.)

Any suggestions? Can I replace the backplane with a 16-bit (or 32 :-)
backplane, or does everything fast have to fit on one card? Any product
recommendations?

Thanks for all ideas,

bob,mon.
