[comp.sys.zenith] Memory for Zenith 386/16

v095juhx@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu (02/23/90)

I have a Zenith 306/16. it came with windows-386, but only with one
Meg of memory, so I can't really use it. I ordered it with 2 meg of memory,
but All I got was one and a $375 refund (four months later). I was ok with the
one meg, but now i want more. The price for a one meg board from zenith now
went up to $475 (student price). I wish I could use SIMMS or something, but
i have to get a board. Can third party boards be used? Of course the manual
says to buy Zenith boards, but I'm sure 3'rd party would be much cheaper.
If I can use third party boards, i would appreciate and advice as to what works
well. I am only looking for 1 or 2 more meg.
  Thanks

A company call First Capitol Computer, #16 Algana Drive, St. Peters, Mo.
63376-3930 has an upgrade to the Zenith 1 Meg Memory board that allows
for 4 meg on the board. If I remember, the price was $895 with 4 meg of
memory, but that may not be correct. But that is an option. They have
a conference on BIX, and messages dropped in their conference or in teh
Zenith conference are answered quickly.

We have been looking into third-party (i.e., 16-bit ISE / AT bus) memory
cards to expand our 386/16's as well. We currently have a BocaRAM AT
board on order. The tech support at Boca says that the old AT boards
are compatible, but that the newer AT Plus boards have problems. (too bad,
since the AT Plus has that software setup rather than dip switches :-)

There is a company out there that modifies the Zenith 1 MB boards to
handle 4 MB, but last I heard (about two months ago) the cost wasn't
much cheaper than the Zenith expansion boards. If you wish, I can dig
up the address for you.

When we get this Boca board, I'll let you know how (or if?) it works.
