[net.micro] Mailing List Submit Kickbacks and Control

GUBBINS@RADC-TOPS20.ARPA (02/23/84)

From: Gern <GUBBINS@RADC-TOPS20.ARPA>

As anyone who has sent a message to this (or any) mailing list knows,
bad addresses of persons on the list get kicked back to the sender.
This gives the submitter a bunch of rejected mail from persons he
has never heard of. There is nothing the maintainer of the list
can do to find the bad addresses, except send a test message thru
and hack off the rejected kickbacks. Requests for addition to
this list is rather good, and many hosts I have never heard from
(but work okay). Some sites re-redistribute this list, so that
kickback problems may not be related to this master list, but
several systems deep somewhere. The first thing I checked into
when I got the mailing list to redistribute was this problem, and
it goes beyond the scope of control of this system as the rejected
messages are sent back to the submitter from the problem site, not
back here first. Yesterday, I hacked off 2 more problem addresses,
one never gave any trouble before and the other from a new person
that had a stable address. The point is, unless I submit something
and get the kickbacks, or persons are kind enough to flag me as
to the problem addresses, I have no way to find out the problems.
If someone knows a way to control and/or monitor this, please flag
me. Thanx

Gern
