[comp.sys.zenith] Adding hard drive to ZF-148

pwr1@cunixf.cc.columbia.edu (Paul Wilbur Romaine) (07/25/90)

I have a dual disk drive ZF-148 with the optional daughterboard which
enables use of a single expansion slot. (The ZF-148 is an older low
profile machine with little expandability.) I'd like to install a
hard disk but am unsure whether the 65 watt (non-replaceable) power
supply could handle one. I've heard that some of the newer 3.5"
half-height hard drives draw less power but haven't confirmed.

1. Has anyone else upgraded (or knows someone who has) a ZF-148 to a
hard disk? Can it be done?

2. Do the higher speed hard disks consume more power than lower speed
(say, 65ms vs. 28ms).

Specifications: ZF-148, 640K, 2 disk drives (1 to go), serial mouse.
I don't know how much power each of these consumes. Everything else
has its own power source.

Thanks for any help.

I have 10 Z-148s in my computer lab at school, and we added 30 meg St-238
drive to them about 3 years ago, and have had no problems with them. We
got 2 slot daughter cards, and have recently added NE-1000 ethernet cards

to them, again with no problem. So, at least with the ST-238s, they seem
to work fine. Michael Setzer II, Computer Science Instructor, GUAM

I seem to remember a problem retrofitting hard disks to the Z148 where
the BIOS on prom didn't understand hard disks. True, or is my memory
faulty? A relative of mine also wants to add a hard disk to his H-148.

Yes it is true. I forgot to mention that when I replied to someone from
Columbia whose name and address I don't remember so I hope they see this.
The hard drive will work but you can't boot from it until you upgrade the
BIOS. ZDS part number is 444-380-xx where xx is the latest revision.
