[comp.sys.zenith] Windows 3.0 on Zenith 386/16

v095juhx@ubvmsd.cc.buffalo.edu (Jon E Luntz) (09/29/90)

Hi,
	I have a Zenith-386/16Mhz, with 2MB ram, and the Z449 video card.
I've been trying to get Windows 3.0 to work on it, but I haven't been able to.
When I try to run other applications, it either runs out of memory or gives
me an error about "Terminating Current Program" which sometiomes referrs to
the main Windows window. I tried installing it as a generic MS-DOS machine,
and as a Zenith-386 type, but it doesn't make a difference. I have 2 Megs of
free disk space after windows is installed, and Windows tells me that I have
1.9 MEG of available memory with over 80% resources left.
I would greatly appreciate any help to get this working.
					Thanks,

Isn't that the brain-dead EGA card?

And, if you're as lucky as me, if you keep playing with it trying to
get it to work, it'll trash your hard disk! (Gee, thanks Uncle Bill!
:-)

I had to install two new ROM BIOS chips in my Z286LP/VGA to get
Windows running (one was a system BIOS, the other a video BIOS).
Until then, Windows did exactly the same thing as you described...

Rumor has it that you also need Zenith DOS running on your machine
(not just Zenith DOS "sys"-ed onto a previous version). Run Zenith's
"prep," "part," and finally "format". Apparently Windows is making
some funky BIOS calls that requires the Zenith OS.

You also need Zenith's version of Windows' "SWAPFILE.EXE" (if you're
going to setup a swapfile).

Lastly, you should tell Windows you're on EGA *not* VGA. Else, go out
and get a real VGA card like the Z-549.

Zenith: Compatability goes out before the name goes on!

Please provide more information: what is in your config.sys, your
autoexec.bat, etc.

I am running Zenith's Version of win 3.0 on my Z-386-16 at this very
moment. I started windows, started Procom+, and logged into the Apollo
at school to start my news program. No problems at all.
I cannot swap to other DOS programs without loosing this connection, as
I loose the mouse control in windows. So, Windows is not perfect, but it
works adaquately. I can swap most programs in and out without too much
problem.

Are you running Zenith Windows or generic?
How old is your 386? - Do you have a fairly recent version of the
rom-bios? I had to replace mine when I got the Zenith Cache card as it
initially refused to work properly.

What mode is windows starting up in?
