[comp.sys.zenith] Questions about ZDS's MSDOS 4.0

jthomas@nmsu.edu (James Thomas) (10/03/90)

A few questions from someone who's finally installed 4.0:

1. My system is a 386-16 with 2M of memory. The second megabyte must be
extended so I can run SPITBOL-386 (! :-). I thought EMM386 would be nice
to use :-( So I fired it up and was happy to see that, despite the
description in the documentation, it did find the 256K from 768K to 1M.
But can someone please tell me what it uses the first 384K that it seems to
reserve? I ran VCACHE with 256K allocated, and MEM shows 5xxK left
(INFOPLUS shows the 384K on handle 000 and VCACHE 256K on handle 001).

2. Next I cranked up WORD 5.0 (the reason I would like some EMS available
until ZDS manages to get my WINDOWS 3.0 order located and until I get WORD
FOR WINDOWS :-). With EMM386 running the arrow keypad keys sometimes
appear as 2-4-6-8 instead of having their movement functions. This is
consistent but not regular. It "never" happens with EMM using 768K to 1M
or 768K to 2M with the board in extended mode. I understand that
interrupts have to be turned off while in protected mode, but
  a) all I am doing is hitting (for example) left arrow / right arrow
      repeatedly,
  b) it's not related to WORD doing its backup,
  c) I don't "think" there is any other disk activity,
  d) I could see characters getting dropped, but changed????
Can someone please tell me this is a bug or explain what's happening?

3. The documentation (has always) neglects(ed) to explain how one should
go about tweaking FILES and BUFFERS . I think I know enough about OS's to
understand them, but now there are at least two new ones in FCB's and
STACK's . Would someone please explain why I might want to change them?

Thank you,
Jim Thomas
