[comp.sys.zenith] Daughter board and hard drive for z-148

tpv@cbnewsd.att.com (timothy.p.villa) (11/22/90)

I would like to install a hard drive in my Z-148 and I would like
to know if I need the daughter board. If I do need the daughter
board, where can I get one. I have the Heath Zenith catalog and
it is not listed in there. If I do not need the daughter board
how do I install the hard drive. The instructions that come with
the PC are not very clear on this.

	Thanks,

I have seen a lot of Z-148 meesages here lately so I thought I would provide
the following infomation for those of you who would like "things" for your
Z-148:

Payload Computer Co.
15718 Sylvan Lake
Houston, Texas 77062
(713)486-0687

They have expansion cards for the Z-148 plus drives, memory, etc. They are
currently running a special on Seagate ST251-0 42Meg Hard drives for $199.00.
The sales person told me that this was a discontinued item by Seagate and they
got a special price on them. A kit for the Z-148, including the expansion
borad and hard disk controller card, listed for $408.

I, in no way, am employed by Payload Computer and am not triyng to push their
products. Just some friendly info for the net.

I had a 148 at one time and there was a little daughter board needed in order
to plug the hard drive controller in, but I had a modem in the machine. I
think if there is nothing else in the machines slots there should be no
problem plugging in the hard drive controller in the slot directly. One other
point the hard drive card may need to be a half slot card. If you have
questions just ask?

For info, the daughter board from Payload Computers comes with TWO slots and
a clock. One slot is the normal one, that would be placed so the the card
would show out the back of the computer (a full size slot, I beleive).
The other slot is a 1/2 size which is internal to the 148. It can be used
for a Hard Drive controller card or any other card that does not need
access to the outside world.

Hope that this sheds some more light on the subject.
