I'm having a heck of a time getting a 2400 b SMART MODEM to work in a Zenith 386/20 desktop. The machine came with 2 serial ports and one parallel ports, one 3 1/2" floppy drive and a 75 MB hard drive. The internal modem is the first thing I've tried to add to the setup. Every time I've tried to install the modem, I get the same frustrating result. I start the software (Procomm Plus without Windows 3.0 running and the Windows 3.0 terminal program) and everything seems to be OK, but I can't issue any commands. If I type, there is absolutely no response. Now let me tell you what I've tried: 1. I put the modem in another computer and it worked. 2. I've disabled the original COM2 and tried the modem set to run at COM2 3. I've tried to set the modem to COM3 and COM4 4. I plugged my phone into the second jack on the modem, and I got a dial tone, so the wire is OK. 5. I tried all sets of interrupt request settings from within Procomm 6. I've tried to remove the board that carries the parallel port and the two COM ports, but the machine wouldn' boot. I always set the port from within the software to match the DIP switch setting. Anyone have any ideas? jake blanchard university of wisconsin -- madison blanchar@engr.wisc.edu jake@nucst6.neep.wisc.edu .

Call your nearest BBS and get a copy of PORTS or something similar to it and see if you really are disabling the com ports when you think you are. Then, get a copy of MODEM DR and check out the modem.
