[comp.sys.zenith] Problems with 286 and Windows 3.0a

zerr@schaefer.math.wisc.edu (Troy Zerr) (04/03/91)

I recently replaced the 20 meg Tandon hard drive and DTC controller in
my zenith 286 with an 80 meg Maxtor IDE drive and IDE/FDD interface.
Ordinary applications seem to work, but when I use Windows applications,
I get random (or seemingly random) Unrecoverable Application Errors
and Protection Violations, making the system useless for my purposes.

My configuration is the following:

8 Mhz Zenith 286 (NOT the LP -- It's just like a 248 with two fewer slots)
  1.44 Meg 3.5" Floppy
  Zenith DOS version 3.21
  Zenith BIOS version 3.34
  Windows v. 3.0a
  512K RAM on CPU card
2M RAM on Bocaram AT Plus card
"Unique" brand model UN-105 IDE/FDD controller card
  Maxtor 80 Meg IDE drive
    (981 Cylinders, 10 Heads, 17 sectors (logical))

The same setup worked properly with the original controller and drive.
I have disabled all device drivers and TSRs, but I still get protected
mode violations and UAEs.

Any Ideas? Please e-mail me at

zerr@math.wisc.edu

if you have any suggestions.

Thanks

Betcha need new ROM chips. I did in a newer 286LP in order to get
Windows to behave.

Under the Monitor program (Control-ALT-INS), you should see version
numbers for your ROM set.
