A special session on "The Use and Development of Interactive Multimedia for
Higher Education" will be held as a pre-conference meeting at the SALT
conference in Orlando. It is sponsored by the Digital Equipment Corporation and
Carnegie Mellon's Center for Design of Educational Computing. It  will be held
on Monday, February 20th, 1989.

The following describes the schedule for the presentations. Each presentation
will use the anecdotal method to disclose the main theme of the topic. It should
prove to be a unique conference. For further information, contact SALT at

Monday, February 20th

A. Introduction  (8:30 to 8:45)

Opening Remarks will state the focus of the sessions and lead to an
introduction to the first topic. (Robert Cavalier, CMU)

B. Development Issues (8:45 to 10:00)

This session will discuss by example and strategy how universities and
departments have engaged in the actual design and development of interactive
multimedia presentations and courseware. All stages in the process, including
the selection of a programming environment, will be addressed. (Scott Stevens,
CMU)

C. Evaluation (10:15 to 11:30)

This session will address the issues of formative and summative evaluation. (Tom
Reeves, University of Georgia)

D. Rights Issues (11:45 to 1:00)

Legal issues/barriers in the reproduction and repurposing of art, film, video
and other sources intrinsic to multimedia projects. (Robert Kost, Prodigy)

Lunch Break (1:00 to 1:30)

E. Usage Issues (1:30 to 2:45)

Both the "barrier to entry" and discussions of how materials are actually used
will be the topics of this session. (Loretta Jones and Stanley Smith, Univ. of
Illinois)

F. Graduate Programs and Curriculum Issues (3:00 to 4:15)

Issues and examples of courses and curricular that aim at preparing a student
for serious and practical studies relating to the design and production of
interactive video and other interactive multi-media presentations. (John
Ittelson, University of California at Chico)

G. Advanced Projects (4:30 to 5:45)

A discussion of selected projects at Brown, Carnegie Mellon, and MIT will be
followed by a discussion of advanced technologies. (Ben Davis, MIT)
