I have been reading recently about the appearance of Polycarbonate 8" CD-V/LV discs. I understand these discs are usually single sided and often require an adaptor (or backing plate) to build them up to the correct thickness for the disk clamps in older LV players. I assume there aren't any major problems with CAV 8" discs and that the standard speed playing time is around 10 minutes in NTSC, rising to 12 minutes or so in PAL. At a rough guess, I assume the page storage ability is of the order of 18,000 frames. Are these figures correct? Does anyone know mastering/cost figures yet for these CD-derived video disks? Are there any services currently offering polycarbonate 8" disc mastering? Any guesses on the proportion of existing CD manufacturing plant that can press this type of disk? I imagine from the delays in shipping CD-Video launch catalogue titles in the UK and Europe, that PDO in Blackburn will disappear from the pressing scene for the forseeable future. What about Sonopress? What is their capacity like at the moment? Are there any US disk manufacturers with spare LV capacity who could press PAL format disks? Sorry for so many questions. I hope that some of these questions suggest ideas to other people on the net, and are therefore useful.
