[Excerpts from "Information Today" May 1989, p.29] Nimbus Announces ED-ROM Education Scholarship Program At the March 1989 Microsoft Conference, Nimbus Information Systems announced its support and interest in advancing education in the United States by creating an educational scholarship program for junior high and high schools. The Nimbus Educational CD-ROM Scholarship Program (ED-ROM) will be award annually to one junior high or high school anywhere in the U.S. on a competitive basis. To qualify, each school must submit a proposal for the creation of a CD-ROM disc by June 1st. The program will begin for the school receiving the scholarship by June 1st of the following year. Nimbus' ED-ROM scholarship program is designed to help creative minds fill 500 megabytes with information of interest and use for not only themselves but for other students in other schools. Basic guidelines for the ED-ROM scholarship program include: 1. The subject matter of the ED-ROM disc must be educational and creativity is strongly encouraged; 2. Training in CD-ROM design and development, the build and retrieve software, disc mastering and replication, and on-going support throughout the nine month ED-ROM program will be provided by Nimbus Information Systems; 3. Each school's proposal submitted must be approved by the principal of the school and have a responsible faculty member in charge; 4. The recipient school will receive 500 ED-ROM discs at no charge. Any revenues realized by the school as a result of later sales of these ED-ROM discs must then be used by that school for the acquisition of additional CD-ROM products for the school's use or for the creation of a second (or third) CD-ROM during the following school year. In addition, Nimbus Information Systems will supply one IBM compatible or Macintosh computer at the school's discretion with 100 megabytes of hard disk drive, one CD-ROM drive, Romware Build and Romware Retrieval software, an ample supply of CD-ROM discs donated by CD-ROM publishers supporting the ED-ROM scholarship program, $1,000 for the acquisition of ancillary software programs for use in creation of the databases for the ED-ROM disc, plus all travel expenses for two students and one faculty member to travel to Nimbus in Charlottesville, Virginia in May to see the actual ED-ROM data preparation, tape formatting, mastering and disc replication process. On their return trip, the two students and faculty member will carry home the school's 500 ED-ROM discs.
