[comp.ivideodisc] UNIX video products, a summary

tciaccio@shamash.cdc.com (Tom Ciaccio) (05/22/89)

A couple weeks ago I posted a request to the net for information on
products that support video input/output on UNIX workstations. Here
is a summary of the information I received:

- RGB Technology of Berkley CA (415) 848-0180 has a box that
supposedly works on all major UNIX workstations. It takes regular RGB
cables for input and output.

- Parrallax Graphics of Santa Clara CA (408) 727-2220 has a board and
X server software that allows live and still video to be displayed in an X
window. The software currently operates on Sun OS v3.5 and on Ultrix
2.0.

- Sun Microsystems just announced a product called Sun Video, a
hardware/software product offering live video in a Sun window.
Currently an option for SPARCstation370, 3/470, and all existing VME
systems on OS4.0.3.

- A company called Abekus apparently has a video product, no further
information available.

- Silican Graphics, INC also apparently has a video product, but again
no further infomation.

Finally, and this isn't a product but Athena Labs at MIT has an active
project called X-video to control still and moving video in the X
environment.

What are "regular" RGB cables?

We have several Abekas devices at NBC and are very satisfied customers.
The Abekas A6x series machines store up to 100 seconds of NTSC/PAL video on
SCSI disks. You can download images into an A60 via ethernet (or as component
or composite analog or digital video) and play them back at 30 fps. It's an
essential tool for rendering, where you can't generate the images as fast as
you want to play them back. You can also control the A60 via ethernet. It
speaks TCP/IP (telnet/ftp/rlogin/rcp) and someone has even written a SunView
interface to control it. Abekas has a uucp connection (pyramid!abekas), but
does not receive USENET. They usually exhibit at SIGGRAPH and were at
USENIX last summer, too.

There are several RGB screen copiers. These comments apply to the Tektronix
printer. Other printers are simular.

The regular RGB cable are 75 ohm coax with BNC connectors. The 4693RGB
can be connected in loop though or single ended. The video adapter samples
the signals being sent to the CRT (or a buffered copy for single ended).
The image must be static for about 4 seconds.

Disclamer: I tried to exclude any opinions, but if there are any opinions
they are mine.

The Sun video board is the Parrallax board under OEM license to SUN (with
a few fixes).
