[comp.ivideodisc] Rewritable Optical Disks

labman@ecr.mu.oz.au (Bruce Robertson) (08/21/90)

 Hi all in netland.

I am making a general enquiry for information regarding Rewritable Optical
Disks. These beasts are just starting to hit the Australian market and what
I desire from netland is some feedback from users who have tried (and won)
installing these beasts on SUN 3/xxx and SUN 4/xxx beasts.
I have seen devices from Sony and Pioneer but the problem is not so much the
device but the device drivers and kernel support.
I know there are a few installations or WORM machines but rewritable is my
 immediate concern.
WHY?? Ihave over 6GigaByte of online storage and want some means of having
fair backup times but fast (very fast) retrieval times.

 Many thanks,
 Bruce Robertson.

Ricoh has developed and marketed a device driver for our (RICOH's)
magneto-optical disks (rewritable optical disks) which supports both
Sun3 and Sun4 (including SPARC station 1).
It perfectly supports removable media.
It reads labels after each media change,
and disables ejecting media while any open file exists on the media.

The only problem is which is marketed in Japan, U.S., and Europe,
as far as I know.

Please contact our sales persons for the details.
I attach their PHYSICAL mail address and FAX numbers.
(since we don't have big time lag between Japan and Australia,
if you can speak Japanese, telephone call is also welcome :-)
