buy a Wyse 50 for $700. 132 columns; keyboard feels good, arranged correctly.

Not only do the VT220 series terminals also put the ESC, BS etc keys
above the number row, but they are only there in vt100 emulation mode!
In "normal" vt220 mode, these keys generate brain-damaged escape
sequences. The closest thing to a escape key in this mode is either
CONTROL-3 (yes, control-key three!) or CONTROL-[

I hope I never have to use one of these things. DEC is reportedly
phasing out the VT100 series terminals, also. Does anyone know of
a good replacement terminal?

Based on my experience with DEC (partly as an employee), it's incorrect
to say that DEC is phasing out the VT-100. More precisely, DEC is expecting
its customers to phase out the VT-100 by buying the (cheaper) VT-220. DEC
can't lower the price of the VT-100 to match - it costs more to produce.
But so long as people keep buying the VT-100, you can expect DEC to keep
making it - that's how they do business.
