Is someone out there who has connected a Pionner LD-V4000 before? I
would like to control the laserdisc player using a RS-232 connection.

If my recollection is correct the LD-V400 is not an RS-232 device.
We have had reasonable success accessing these players using a
product called PCLS from Visual Database Systems.  This is a
cable that hooks to the parallel port and uses software to
generate the proper timing for the 4000's computer port.  
I assume they are still around but I haven't spoken with them
