I came across mention of an Icon application that I thought might be worth mentioning. In the ACM SIGPLAN Notices Volume 24, Number 7 (July 1989), Proceedings of the SIGPLAN '89 Conference on Programming Language Design and Implementation there is one paper by Christopher W. Fraser (now of AT&T Bell Laboratories), A Language for Writing Code Generators. This is on page 238 of the Proceedings. On page 244 there is a section named "Discussion" whose first paragraph says in part, "The sample rules above demonstrate all principal features of the rule language. The rule compiler is written in the Icon programming language and takes about 1000 lines." It's nice to see an application of Icon that is part of some cutting-edge research. (The acknowledgements also credit Dave Hanson with some of the work.) David S. Cargo
