[comp.lang.icon] Objects and Icon

cjeffery@ARIZONA.EDU ("Clinton Jeffery") (10/30/89)

Several people have done work towards an object-oriented Icon. The first
person to propose anything concrete was (I think) Bill Griswold; I hope
he (and the others working in this area) will comment on the status of
their projects and whether they are publicly available.

My own hack, an Icon-Derived Object Language (Idol), will be described in
the next Icon newsletter. It is a preprocessor rather than a modification
to icont or a variant translator. It provides the encapsulation and
auto-setup procedures you requested within the framework of classes
and multiple inheritance. It looks more like Icon than C++.

I will see about placing a copy of Idol in our FTP copying area. Email
me if you are interested.
