[net.micro] What do I need to run Xenix on a Z800X machine?

---------
First, some background information. I am an advisor for an Explorer post
which is badly in need of some processing power (we have a computer science
post). In particular, a Un*x-like, multi-user environment is desirable.

I am able to come up with a system that has a Z8001 with an MMU and bunches
of memory. I have now been saying to myself, "Wouldn't it be nice if we
could get Xenix up on this thing, with little modification?"

It boils down to a cash problem. We could afford the software, but could
not buy a wonder system. So, we have to make do.

Now, the big question: What do I need in the way of a system in order to
run Xenix?

I understand that Zeus (from Zilog) is tailored to their development system,
and needs 3 MMUs to work. Is there a similar requirement for Xenix?

Can I hack my own device drivers in without a source license? (The system
I can get has several non-standard interface serial ports, which I would
like to use.)

Am I crazy? Should I give up?

Any and all information is greatly appreciated.

Thanx,
