[comp.lang.rexx] AREXX

jac@muslix.llnl.gov (James Crotinger) (09/03/89)

Tried to send this to eddie@at, but it bounced. Since the REXX
on the Amiga is fairly popular, this might be of general interest...
Note that I have no financial association with Bill Hawes, I'm
just a very satisfied customer. Also, TINAR 8-).

AREXX is an implementation of REXX for the Commodore Amiga. It is
written by Bill Hawes. It is quite inexpensive (<$50).
You can order it directly from Bill or you can get it mail order.
Bill's address is

                       P.O. Box 308
                       Maynard, MA 01754

and his phone is (617) 568-8695.

Bill also has a shell, called WShell, that is AREXX compatable.
Basically, it provides some special abilities to AREXX programs, and
it also considers AREXX to be its main scripting language..i.e. if
you type a command, the REXX: path is searched for the command before
the regular command search path.

Commodore has licensed AREXX and will include it in v1.4 of the OS.

I dont know if this is the right group for this, but here goes anyway:
Since there seems to be so much interest in AREXX, why not create a separate
group for it. ReXX (on CMS) and AREXX are different enough animals that
they should have separate groups.

It already exixts - comp.lang.rexx.amiga. There should also be groups
for cms, mvs, and the IBM pc.

In fact, that's a good suggestion. Currently, Bitnet has split AREXX
to the AREXX-L group and created a general REXX group separately (REXXLIST).
The AREXX group on USENET should feed the Bitnet AREXX-L group and the
REXX group on USENET should feed the Bitnet REXXLIST group. No one
on USENET seems to use CMS, so there is not much traffic for CMS REXX
on USENET.

It is true that most CMS traffic goes on the bitnet mailing list rather
than here, but lots of CMS sites do receive usenet. PSUVM, for one,
and they feed lots of others.

I mildly disagree; if there are different REXX newsgroups
corresponding to different dialects of REXX, we a) encourage
different implementations of REXX to offer different language
constructs, etc., instead of encouraging all implementations
to stay in synch. We should avoid balkanizing REXX. Further,
we b) miss interesting and/or useful ideas that AREXX folks,
CMS folks, and unix folks (eventually) will have. Not so that
noone on CMS uses USENET. I had a conversation last evening
with a CMS person who learned of me thru USENET.

I pretty much aggree, but I think that the threat of different dialects
of Rexx isn't really there. The 'dialect' stems from the same roots (early
rexx things running on VMS (I guess... not sure)). The dynamics of the
language are the same.

If someone was actualy proposing a new construct to rexx, the person would
probably 'cross post' to all the rexx newsgroups. (not all that many really)

Also, the different implementations of rexx are already pretty much
incompatble. Take Arexx for example. Plenty of machine specifics
to get in the way of porting something over to another system.

ARexx comes bundled with Workbench 2.0 (currently only available to developers
and owners of Amiga 3000's... soon to be shipping in ROM for Amiga 2000's).
For users of previous Workbench releases, you must buy it either directly
from Wishful Thinking Development Corp. or through your dealer. Cost is
minimal (less than US$50).
