[news.software.nntp] nntpxmit and host names

dsill@relay.nswc.navy.mil (Dave Sill) (11/17/89)

I recently upgraded from version 1.5 to 1.5.7 (and switched from B
news to C, but that's another story). Now nntpsend/nntpxmit can't
seem to look-up hostnames, e.g. nap1.cds.wpafb.af.mil (one of my
feeds) but have no problem with 129.48.1.1 (one of nap1's addresses).

As a workaround, I changed sys and nntpsend to refer to the numeric
addresses, but I'd prefer to use alphanumeric names. Is this a known
problem, or did I do something knuckleheaded when I upgraded?

My configuration is C News Sept14 on a 4.3 VAX.

Thanks.

nntpxmit is, I think, set up by default to link with libresolv. If
you're not using DNS lookup (resolv.conf, etc), then this is almost
certainly the wrong think. Compiling without the -lresolv commented
out will look things up in either the static tables or YP if you're
running it.
