Here's our scenario: We want to start receiving our news with NNTP. The machine that holds our news right now is on a private net, hidden from the outside world by a firewall router, and therefore unable to talk NNTP. There is no easy solution to this problem. We could put the machine on the public side of the firewall, but that's not likely because it has source code on it. We could tell the router to allow "selected" traffic, i.e. NNTP, to pass through, but that makes everybody very nervous. We could move news to a public machine, that's tough because none of our public machines have the kind of disk space that news requires.
