Hello, I have never posted a patch to this group, so here goes. I have been
testing nntp.1.5.9 prior to installing it. I located and patched a bug in the
NEWGROUPS command.
The bug is that when you use the NEWGROUPS command the server dies and
the connection is broken. It turns out that this happens because of a blank
line in the /usr/lib/news/active.times file. Removing the blank line fixed the
immediate problem.
The following is a patch for newgroups.c.

I hope that this helpful to any others who have this annoying problem.
