About once a week I get a note from /usr/lib/newsbin/ctl/checkgroups saying that "the following newsgroups are not valid and should be removed". It then goes on to list every newsgroup! I've scanned the program for references to this checkgroups script to find out who is running it (it isn't a straight cron entry) in order to determine the context of the message, but can't find the calling program, either.
